Thanks to all who responded. Whilst I agree wholeheartedly with those who
said that I shouldn't be doing this, there are 'political' reasons why I'm
pursuing it.
I haven't finally resolved the issue, but I seem to be making some progress
with an external CD writer. (The erratic behaviour of the installed drive
was why I didn't follow through with this earlier.)
It seems that W/XP will acknowledge the existence of a FAT32 partiton
created by something other than itself, but then refuses to have anything
more to do with it.....
