Hmm blank screen on Ubuntu sounds familiar.
Is this another combination where Compiz needs to be disabled ?

sudo apt-get autoremove compiz
sudo apt-get autoremove compiz-core

Fixed my blank screen problems  on a Dell with U8.10 recently.
