There's an open source tool called ArgyllCMS [1] that supports many of
the available calibration gadgets, including the Spyder 2. The website
has lots of information about supported hardware -- the author suggests
avoiding the Spyders because of the lack of OSS enthusiasm from the
manufacturer and the need to mess about with a firmware blob. I've got
an X-rite i1display LT which has worked very well in the short time I've
had it.
I'm not an expert on CMS though, and I'd welcome a talk/discussion on
the subject at a meeting.
