Have you tried becoming root then doing:
/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
That should rebuild the kernel modules.

Thanks - but I don't get that option. If I do
sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
then I get
* Usage: /etc/init.d/vboxdrv {start|stop|restart|status}
I've tried
/etc/init.d/vboxdrv restart
which gives
* Stopping VirtualBox kernel module vboxdrv [
OK ]
* Starting VirtualBox kernel module vboxdrv
* No suitable module for running kernel found.
I think part of the problem must be that I can't see
virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.24-22-386 in synaptic so I've installed -generic
instead - but obviously there's something wrong somewhere.

OK folks - for the record I've fixed it. The winning formula is not ideal
(in that I used the 2.0.2 version from the website which is closed source)
but.
1) Use synaptic to remove virtualbox-ose and _every_ virtualbox-ose-module*
package
2) Install the deb file as normal
If you don't remove every single module - it will fail to install.
