Another thought: have you cheched the depths of the HP website? There used to be a scheme called "renew" (or something like that) that let you buy machines from cancelled orders or that had been remanufactured after QC failure at bug discounts.
They list why each machine is on there. I once saw one of there video editing systems at I think £700 off listed as "QC failure - scratch on top of case"
