Indeed. Of course many people have compiled binaries, or otherwise
writable things in ~/bin.
And I realise I was going on a tangent, I was mis-remembering the name
of the last virus that "scared" people. Lion is a worm that exploited
specific security holes - and is indeed patched. Sorry!
