I have found this problem with hardy on some laptops.
CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE is a way round it.
What is does is log you out, and when you try the second time it works.
Don't know why yet, but I have known about deadlocks relating to
Network Manager resulting in a locked out keyboard and mouse.
