Hosting yourself doesn't necessarily mean hosting at home. I have a virtual
server from bitfolk.com which hosts my email in a linux machine in London. I
can access it using whatever protocols I configure (IMAP for example).

This gives me quite a degree of control over email address, spam control and
so on.
