I did this recently with my daughter's machine. It was painless and
completed in less than two hours, fromstart to finish.
I had a separate /home partition, which was carefully noted, used but
excluded from formatting at the relevant point in the installation. A
backup prior to doing this is a good idea. For little effort it
requires, a backup of /etc is probably a good idea too. That said, I
would hope that Gutsy will do a better job of detecting your hardware
and configuring it than an earlier release, so any reference to old
config files should be largely unnecessary. That was certainly my
experience.
