Next thing to do, then, is run "locale" and see what that comes up
with. I have:
hrm@varney:/var/www/carfax.org.uk$ locale
LANG=en_GB.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="en_GB.UTF-8"

You may have to restart X, or even reboot, to get it to pick up the
new settings permanently system-wide. If you don't want to do that for
now, you can hack things around in your .profile, .bash_profile or
.bashrc, but I wouldn't recommend that as a permanent solution.
