A dist-upgrade won't change your config unless you ask it really
nicely with a piece of 2x4.

That would indicate that the problem isn't to do with the graphics
card driver.

The usual place to look for X debuggering information is
/var/log/Xorg.0.log. That will usually tell you why it's not starting.
If you need help, bung it on a website somewhere, along with your
/etc/X11/xorg.conf, and post the location here, and we can take a look
at it.
