Thanks for all the suggestions!

I've now worked out what happened: when using usermod -G to add myself to
the lpadmin group, I inadvertently *replaced* my membership of the admin
group.

Solution: Recovery mode, usermod -G for both groups, re-boot.

Lessons have been learned......
