I hadn't - that was exactly what I was looking for...

It got me almost all the way there, too - I could rescan any device that
was fitted at BIOS boot.

So Nick gets today's star prize with his intimate knowledge of a script
with the catchy name of "rescan-scsi-bus.sh" (found at
http://bash.cyberciti.biz/diskadmin/rescan-scsi-bus.sh.php ), which finds
any drives fitted, regardless of when. All I've got to do now is work out
how to ensure the same port gets the same descriptor, and Robert is an
uncle again :-)
