The Sarge and Etch kernels require incompatible initrd structures, so
to upgrade from Sarge to Etch you will need to remove the running
kernel - that is the point of no return. You can install intermediate
pre-stable etch kernel if you want to maintain the ability to roll
back.
I did the upgrade in one go on two systems and it went fine
- but I'll agree it wasn't a nice thing to do, a third system was
running Etch for months, so it upgraded via an intermediat kernel.
On one system it also tried to remove pretty much everything x and KDE
related, I let it, then added it all back and it was happy - I don't know
which package caused it to get upset.

Yes, I'm bitter and cynical. That does not make me wrong.
