We used to use it, had Sunbird on Doze clients and they sync'd with a Apache / WebDav server. It 
worked but had issue's with multiple users on a single calendar and people sync'n there calendar and 
wiping what other people has just uploaded.
The Apache / Webdav bit was really easy to setup, I think I followed a howto I got off google.
