alsamixer is a command line (ncurses-style) tool. There is alsamixer-gui which 
is a graphical version of the same thing. However the KDE and GNOME (and 
whatever other DE you use that provides such a thing) sound mixers are yet 
again front-ends to the same thing.
To an extent it doesn't matter which one you use as long as you like the way 
it looks and has the features you want. I use the alsamixer-gui program when 
there isn't quite enough control on the simple GNOME mixer.
