[Hampshire] Switching to Kubuntu

Hello everyone

After using Slackware for some years I am planning to switch to a distro
with better package management; and since Debian's reputation is second
to none in this field... I chose Kubuntu.

My friend is downloading the DVDiso for me.

My first question is how to enable mp3/MPEG-4 playback in Kubuntu??

Pleas don't suggest the "apt get foo" method.... cos

1) I am very new to Debian and don't have a clue as to how it works (I
admit some reading is due here)

2) I don't have broadband connection :-(

I plan to download the pkgs at my friend's place and then bring them
back home on a USB-drive.... is that at all possible?? if so, can some
one guide me please
