Of course the Soviets tried the same thing with their maps, though I
don't know with what success. I do know that they excluded not just
"security related" locations, but also anywhere they didn't much want
tourists to go, like run-down areas ghettos.

It doesn't take long to prove that maps like that are useless and wrong.
