Using "linux26 expert" at the very first boot prompt on the install
disk should do a minimal system installation -- particularly if you
skip the package selection step at the end entirely. This will give
you a text-only system, from which you can install only the bits you
need.
My Compact-Flash-based firewall, running Debian:
