I had to resort to a text-based install via the 'Alternative' disc, 
which installed very nicely in the end, and to be honest, which I think 
I prefer.
Also, have you looked on the 'Linux on Laptops' [1] site? It may have 
some useful pointers or even a howto for your laptoy.
As for the KDE component, I have always gone for a regular Ubuntu 
install and then added in the KDE component where required (which it is 
generally not, in my case). I appreciate that if disk space is a 
consideration then you might not want to go that route.
