Hi, this is my first go at using the new list so let's hope I've got it right.
I now have the use of a new laptop. It is a Sony Vaio VGN-FE31H with a
Core 2 Duo processor/s. It has of course Windows XP (Media Center)
installed but I should also like to be able to boot Linux also. I have
run Ubuntu 6.06 from a live CD which seems to find all the necessary
bits and pieces including the Wireless card. Knoppix 5.0.1 Live CD
just froze part way through! There are no Windows CD's with the
machine but there is the facility to backup the system files and data
to DVD which I have done. The documentation (what little there is)
says the hard disk consists of 3 partitions. One hidden having the
restore tools, the C drive for Windows and a D drive that can be used
for data.
Now to my question. Are there any particular precautions I should take
before installing Ubuntu as I am concerned that if I inadvertently
delete partition one or damage the partition table I shall not be able
to restore Windows.
Below is the result of running sfdisk -l /dev/sda from the Ubuntu CD
Disk /dev/sda: 14593 cylinders, 255 heads, 63 sectors/track
Units = cylinders of 8225280 bytes, blocks of 1024 bytes, counting from 0
Device Boot Start End #cyls #blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 0+ 1033 1034- 8305573+ 12 Compaq diagnostics
/dev/sda2 * 1034 8328 7295 58597087+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda3 8329 14592 6264 50315580 f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/sda4 0 - 0 0 0 Empty
/dev/sda5 8329+ 14592 6264- 50315548+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
Any hints or tips would be gratefully received.
